FAQs

What you need to know?

Aloe from the Canary islands

The Canary Islands bring together a set of unique conditions for growing high-quality Aloe vera: plenty of sunlight and a warm, arid and windy environment. This privileged climate, together with the volcanic soil of the Islands, which is very porous and rich in minerals, makes the Archipelago one of the best places to grow Aloe vera.

There are over 400 varieties of aloe. However, Aloe Barbadensis Miller (Aloe vera, true aloe), is the one which is grown in the Canaries and which we use to produce our pure Aloe vera juice.

Yes. Aloe vera requires plenty of sunlight and a warm, arid and windy environment. The climate of the southern part of the Canary Islands has all of these requirements: a large number of sunshine hours all year round, stable temperatures, very low precipitation and constant trade winds.

Conditions from which we benefit at Atlantia through growing Aloe vera organically, allowing the plant to develop its full potential. Thus, scientific studies have highlighted that aloe grown in the Canaries has a higher concentration of active components than that which is grown in other regions.

For some years, Canarian entrepreneurs dedicated to producing Aloe vera grown in the Archipelago have been denouncing the (unscrupulous) use of the “Canarian brand” to obtain higher revenues from products. It is very common to see many commercial creams made with “Canarian” Aloe vera.

A common practice which leads to deception and lies, since there appears to be a certain discrepancy on the label between the “Canary Islands” brand and the real place where the product has been imported. “Counterfeiters” benefit from this to use Aloe from a different origin to the Canaries and later falsify the information on the label.

The sector also denounces the damage caused to the “Canarian brand” by visitors buying products which they believe to have been 100% made in the Archipelago, and when using them, discovering their similarity to conventional creams. And many are tourists who choose to return to their countries with Canarian Aloe vera products.

Atlantia Aloe

It is impossible to keep 100% pure Aloe vera in a pot, as it will dry out or oxidise in less than 24 hours due to its natural condition and will lose some of its properties. However, at Atlantia we add a number of necessary components to pure Canarian Aloe vera juice in order to create the gel as well as to preserve it.

Some perfectly depicted ingredients on the label or INCI of the products: 95% Aloe barbadensis leaf juice and 5% glycerine, caprylyl glycol, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, citric acid, ascorbic acid, sodium metabisulfite.

To ensure that our products are of the highest quality, we take care of the entire process from the first phases:

  • Aloe vera organically grown in the Canaries: 100% organic, it’s not genetically modified and no synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides have been used to grow it.
  • The recently cut fresh leaves of the plant are harvested.
  • The pulp is extracted and pressed, it is filtered and cold stabilised: the gelatinous transparent pulp is extracted, impurities are removed, and it is stored in refrigerated stainless steel tanks to guarantee the preservation of all its properties.
  • Making the products: Under no circumstances are Aloe vera concentrates or powders used to make the products, as the processes to which the gel is subjected in order to obtain these concentrates or lyophilisates remove a large amount of the active ingredients which are naturally present in the plant.
  • Packaged to preserve its quality: Atlantia’s packaging has been especially designed so that the product maintains all of its properties. This is the case with Atlantia Pure Aloe Vera Gel and the Atlantia Male Line, whose packaging is air-free. Therefore, these products are perfectly preserved for much longer.

Organic Certification

Organic Farming Certification: The message is, that we use 100% organically grown Aloe vera for our products, as shown on the label “Comes from organic plantations in the Canary Islands.”

In fact, the body which certifies organic farming in the Canaries is CRAE. This body certifies the farming, but not the processed products emanating from this farming.

Certifying seals really are a business. And there is a countless number of seals in the organic produce market; each one with its own requirements, which are different in each country and which the consumer generally ignores. In fact, in France there is the so-called “Ecocert”, which is the most recognised, but in the UK, they have the “Soil Association". Conversely, in Germany, they tend to use the Öko certificates. In the case of Italy, there is a large number of seals due to a lack of agreement between different standards.

The aim is to blend the different certifications and labels in order to create an internationally recognised seal for organic and natural cosmetics. Initially, it will be added to the certifications of the five founding partners, these being the only ones who can apply for the new seal. It was estimated that the joint certification would appear at the end of 2014, but in reality, it still doesn’t exist.
